Network Marketing is about building a network of independent distributors and it is about marketing.
In conventional marketing, most manufacturers go through a channel of middlemen such as sole agent, agent, sub agents, wholesalers and retailers, there may be different names for these middlemen, and they play an important role in helping to move the products to the consumers and they get paid for their time and effort.
Most products have to go through a chain of middlemen before reaching the consumers. Plus there are high cost of advertising involved to educate the consumers on the products or to get them excited enough to want to purchase the products from the retailers.
Guess who are paying for all the payments made to these middlemen and the costs of advertising? It's the consumers because all the costs of distribution plus advertising costs are added into the final price of the product.
In network marketing, instead of paying a chain of middlemen and spending millions on advertising, the company decides to distribute the products through a network of independent distributors.

In network marketing it is very cost-effective because commissions are only paid when a sale is made!
Thousands of independent distributors are not salaried sales representatives, they own their business and operate it at their own costs and are rewarded by a brilliant, proven and effective compensation plan.
Instead of having a salaried sales force or paying a chain of middlemen and spending millions on advertising, the company rewards a network of independent distributors through a brilliant, proven and effective compensation plan!
Another way to look at network marketing is to look at it as if it's a worldwide "co-operative club" where members enjoy products at below retail price because the co-operative club enjoys bulk discounts and pass them onto its members!
And this "co-operative club" will pass on more discounts to their members in the form of commissions for introducing members into the club.
